The Laura: Living a Legacy

The story of The Laura Hotel is tied to Houston’s earliest days as a city built on ambition, movement, and possibility. In 1837, the steamboat Laura traveled Buffalo Bayou, helping prove Houston’s promise as a port city and setting the course for generations of commerce, culture, and growth. Today, The Laura Hotel carries that pioneering spirit forward in downtown Houston, with  our signature Southern hospitality, creative energy, and a bold sense of place inspired by the vessel that helped shape the city’s future.

1836

The Republic of Texas wins its independence from Mexico and chooses Houston as the capital city of its newly sovereign nation. Families from throughout Europe flock to this new land of opportunity.

1837

Developers John K. Allen and Augustus C. Allen move to Houston, intent on making the city the center of commerce and culture in the new republic. That January, they steam through the Buffalo Bayou on a ship named The Laura, proving that Houston was a viable port city and paving the way for its future prosperity.

1845

Texas becomes the 28th state of the expanding United States of America. Trade expands with other states throughout the union, aided by the city’s active port.

20th & 21st Century

Houston is now one of the most active ports in the world, with the critical Houston Shipping Channel operating through what was once Buffalo Bayou. Industry here employs 1.2 million Americans, enables over $265 billion in revenue, and has created a vibrant downtown.

Today

The Laura Hotel continues in the pioneering footsteps of her namesake, catering to those visiting Houston for everything from ballgames to business ventures. The Southern hospitality, welcoming spirit, and unapologetic passion for living life to the fullest that compelled a little steamer to do the impossible continue to inspire us to this day.
